Gasklockan Echoes

What initiated Efterklang is the demolition of Gasklockan, the huge gasometer in the Gothenburg harbour, significant due to its role both as a visual and historical landmark for the citizens of Gothenburg.

Gas played a big part in Gothenburg becoming the major industrial city of Sweden from the mid eighteen hundreds and onwards, but it was equally important for the city households as it was used for stoves and water heaters, so in that sense you could argue that gas fed Gothenburg in many ways.

The work Echoes uses audio material from all of these different areas as raw material which are then treated sonically and used as base for a composition played back in an eight channel surround sound representation of the acoustic properties of the original 20 seconds long echo inside the Gasklockan.

In addition to this, when the work is not being played, the visitors at Järhallen will have the opportunity to have their voices heard in the same acoustic environment as Gasklockan. Microphones will pick up whatever sounds the visitors may produce and have these sounds fed through the same 20 seconds of echo.

As a second addition to Efterklang we invite anyone on the planet to call up Gasklockan. The caller’s voice will be fed through the same computerized treatment as the composition and played back in Järnhalllen thereby letting voices of the world be heard through the sonic marvel of Gasklockan.

In December 2016 Efterklang was exhibited at Götaplatsen, in front of the Gothenburg Museum of Art.
